'Obaa Pa"
‘Obaa Pa’, directly translates to ‘The Good Woman’, from the Akan traditional language of Twi.
A theme explored some of my other works is that of “Feminine Attributes” which, for me, were used to express and explore the many characteristics and traits I believe every female/woman possesses.
Similarly, this piece was created to portray the idea of femininity. Obaa Pa is a fusion of several Adinkra symbols, each of which symbolised an attribute (such as bravery, wisdom, faithfulness etc.) that i believe all women, especially African Women possess. Obaa Pa was inspired first, by Traditional Akan Adinkra Symbols and then by a piece entitled Woman is Key by Ghanaian artist Ken Gwira. With the creation of Obaa Pa, I hope to portray to audiences the multifaceted and unique nature of African culture women.
