CVERNOVKA Urban Design 2017

The industrial zone “Cvernovka” is a space with a specific identity situated in the central zone of Bratislava. The factory started running at the beginning of 20th century and had been functioning over one hundred years.
Due to its industrial history and location the urban area has a great potential. Its character has been strengthened in the last decade after the initiative of Slovak artists, which pointed out the name of “Cvernovka” in a new sense. It gained a label of an artistic centre formed from the bottom up by the community.
The new urban structure is superimposed on the original site, of which a majority is already replaced although remains as a palimpsest covered by layers of the new design.
In order to let the character of the former industrial area sustain, the design proposes the only original warehouse (spinning mill & the power centre) and its direct surrounding as the core of this new city quarter. Various urban spaces linked to the main public space create diverse environments with different levels of privacy.
The design proposes a public space, which integrates all people.
The approach encourages open-mindedness of inhabitants and visitors, which is often lacking in our environment. At the same time it refers to the "lightness of being" of the community lifestyle, which was typical for this area.

paradox
This solution is in contrast to the original spatial planning of the area, which played a role of an island. First of all due to its former industrial function, to its urban character of a block inaccessible for public and finally the fact of becoming a home for a closed community.
