Suburbia is a piece triggering conversation on the contrast between two common images of suburbs: one of a monotonous residential scenery and the other of a family life. The framed typography sits in a box which may also suggest an unchanging and isolated depiction of suburbs.
By way of translating this duality of isolation and new life into a physical form, the open sign displays decaying typography and liveliness. Presenting different textures through space to create depth and light play, the layers of distressed and weathered Suburbia are brushed, cracked and washed. This lit “ouvert” sign welcomes its viewers, while projecting a feeling of neglect.
