Sustainable Entrance
Digital: SketchUp

ProjectObjective: To design an environmentally responsible entrance addition to an existing structure within a given program and within restrictive site parameters.  Special consideration is to be given towards developing a striking aesthetic that personifies the values of the client.

Project Concept: The entrance addition to Ludlum Hall embodies the college’s administrative philosophy of a transparent learning community while aesthetically complementing the existing structure in an environmentally conscious design. The
form of the building from its footprint to roof is defined by the site conditions at the intersection of two major campus axis. The result is a building envelope that sculpturally embraces the plaza to the north of Ludlum Hall in a curving façade while set back from the communal axis running before the site. This move not to sever the axis or encroach on the plaza affirms the community physically and metaphorically; that the administration housed within Ludlum Hall and its new addition welcomingly embrace the diversity of students and staff at the college. As such, the design represents the application of contemporary deconstructivist philosophies; that a building need not be derived from the emulation of tradition but rather physically embody the ideals of the inhabiting culture.
