Buzescu, the Beverly Hills of the Gypsies

100 kilometers away from Bucharest, in the middle of corn and wheat fields lies the surprising town of Buzescu.  Buzescu is a concentration of 3, 4 and 5 floor mansions over a 20 block area where romanian gypsies give free rein to all their architectural fantasies and live far from the stereotype of poverty and marginalization that is associated with them.

The town's population seems to be made up entirely of old people and young kids. Most of the town's adults spend most of the year working in western European countries, especially in metal recycling, which is the traditional trade of the Calderash tribe.

Many of the rooms in the houses remain unused.  The number of floors and towers of a house indicate the social and economic status of the family, which is very important especially for this community which has been discriminated in Romania for centuries.
