“EMBRACE” BY TRISTAN KERR
This mural is a reflection of the diverse multicultural communities that live in Adelaide. “Embrace” is an idea inspired by the quote “Embrace the tides of change”. The title underpins the diversifying cultures and communities in Adelaide and the notion that we need to accept rather than refuse, that change is no threat to culture.
The contemporary cluster of overlayed forms is a direct link to diversity and all aspects of life. The subject matter of mark makings, signpainting and torn billboards are references to common artifacts found in our daily urban environment and are treated in a way to convey a notion of time, transformation and in an essence diversity. This re-appropriation of urban markings, often seen as vandalism or graffiti, is contradictory to that of the contemporary urban art mural and its purpose to help build a community.
A new working font was also designed through the exploration of neighbourhood signage and hand-painted letters and was used as the main typography for the mural.
