280A is an association of artists and curators based in Vienna with a strong focus on contemporary art and post photographic practice. Acting as an international collective, our vision is to create an artistic network that provides a possibility for artist to present their works beside conventional galleries and produce new works for specific curatorial projects all around the world.

280A ist ein Kollektiv internationaler KünstlerInnen und KuratorInnen mit Sitz in Wien mit Fokus auf zeitgenössischer Kunst und post-fotografischer Praxis. 280A versteht sich als Schnittstelle, die durch die starke grenzüberschreitende Vernetzung ihrer KünstlerInnen die Möglichkeit bietet, Werke außerhalb konventioneller Galerien zu präsentieren. Die Arbeit des Kollektivs wird von der Sentimentalität und dem Bedürfnis nach Körperlichkeit im Zeitalter der Virtualisierung und der physischen Dominanz digitaler Oberflächen geleitet. Die einzelnen künstlerischen Positionen verschmelzen zu einer kollektiven Präsentationsform. Auf diese Weise werden die teilnehmenden KünstlerInnen sowohl auf der Suche nach Originalität und wiedererkennbarer Handschrift als auch in ihrer Suche nach Verbundenheit und Symbiose hinterfragt – und gefordert. Beim Kuratieren übersetzt 280A das Dilemma der Sehnsucht nach Verbindung in metaphorische Installationen. Das Kollektiv bedient sich verschiedener Gruppenritualen und widmet sich künstlerischer Obsession - frei nach der dionysischen, ekstatischen Erfahrung.
Basierend auf eigenen kuratorischen Projekten werden neue Arbeiten konzipiert und realisiert; 280A fungiert gleichfalls als Produzent, Präsentationsplattform und unabhängiger Verlag und bietet ein Gegenmodell zum konventionellen Kunstbetrieb. Die Projekte reichen von Ausstellungen, Publikationen, Print-Editionen, Festivals, Messen bis hin zu kuratierten Auslandsaufenthalten.
“Transforming Memories” was the opening project of 280A. Within the program of the 1st Worldwide Studiobiennale they presented the first exhibition and publication at 280A Artspace in Vienna under the title TRANSFORMING MEMORIES. It collected the works of 11 international artists from different cultures, backgrounds and artistic approaches that were invited to produce a new work according to the theme of visual memory. The exhibition was a portable kit of images/memories, a multum in parvo, a small accumulation of personal or cultural memory, the transformation of reality, the transformation and rethinking of memory and its processes.
LIQUID LANDSCAPES was the second curatorial publication project within the association. Curators and artists from their network were invited to submit concepts that question the relation between photography and nature. The publication was extended in an travelling exhibition of selected artists from this publication.
SENTIMENTAL DEFENSE is the third publication project within our association. This publication is the result of a 10-days artist retreat which took place in the French town of Cassis featuring 8 international artists from the collective. Allowing to create new material focused on the theme
of sentimentality or emotionality. “SENTIMENTAL DEFENSE” offers the possibility of returning to the intuitive feeling, be in art and/or society
is open, even to our own.
