Onkalo
A project created to warn mankind.
Humans created nuclear waste without thought about the consequences that it may have in our future. Onkalo is a site in west Finland that has created a burial ground for nuclear waste to be stored and protect us from it’s danger for next 100,000 years. If dug up, well, one might not live to tell the tale. The challenge was to design a project that would notify/warn the current generation about the site and steer them away from danger. In the ongoing debate on how to best handle the situation of notification, I took the stance that people should be notified and should then forget all about Onkalo. We are a needy, greedy race that total loss of consciousness would result best in keeping the “burial grounds” preserved until the nuclear waste is considered harmless.

The book acts as a notification of the subject material including facts, figures, location, and aims. As the book transitions from facts to myths about what the human race will be like in 100,000 years to how to keep people out, the text slowly begins to fade into the photographs. As the reader is informed they are also reminded to forget as the book draws to a conclusion with constant reminders to “stop and forget.”

The front cover and several inside spreads were silkscreened with glow-in-the-dark ink. Nuclear waste literally seeps up the page reminding that the Onkalo site is a dangerous place.
