Loneliness - Functional brooch made from copper and wire
Intro to Jewelry, Winter Session 2017

In this piece, my brooch was inspired by the television series “Black Mirror” where it centers on dark and satirical themes that show the consequences of new technology in the modern society. I feel that we are currently in that area of advancing technology where we have new gadgets that is keeping us busy from the social world or making our lives easier. This brings up the idea also of the death of physical media where we do not interact with things outside of technology as much nowadays.
I created the eye with pierced circles as the pupil that symbolizes a “loading” sign as we would see on our computer screens or hand held devices. This represents ourselves as if we were staring into the screen, something we see very often, with the eyelid slightly closed down as we usually tend to look down instead of up or our surroundings in the physical world. The little figure sitting at the bottom of the eye was inspired by the Japanese phrase “hikikomori” where it is defined as “pulling inward” or “being confined”. People who are known to be hikikomoris today are seen as hermits, reclusive to the world. It relates to the idea how we are withdrawn from social life and the physical word because I feel we are isolated and confined in a world where we rely and surround ourselves with technology.
