While I’m usually in the studio teaching ballet, tap, and jazz at the North Dakota Academy of Dance, this winter I created the promotional materials for the 2017 winter recital: an all genres production of Alice in Wonderland. Provided with the photo of the performance’s principal dancers, the project consisted of printed 11x17 flyers, tickets for the production, social media graphics, and a printed program.
The flyer, tickets, and social media graphics involved incorporating text into the provided photo without detracting from the photo itself. I chose to place the title text into the surroundings and have the dancers’ bodies interact with it. The supplementary information regarding location and ticket sales was integrated on a tag to invoke the imagery of the “drink me” tag shown in the 1951 and 2010 films and this production.
The owner of the studio and choreographers for the production wanted a non-traditional approach to the program, taking the audience on a journey following Alice through Wonderland rather than merely listing each piece. I chose to take a map approach and hand sketch elements from the 1951 film to graphically represent each piece in the production. In order to not detract from the map, the cast list was printed on an insert to list the names and choreographers of each piece.
