Adrian Hands Academy

Adrian Hands Academy
Adrian Hands Academy is a TK-8 charter school with the mission of cultivating global citizens empowered to build a peaceful society. Its curriculum consists of three main pillars--STEAM, trilingual education, and peace building.

The school name is dedicated to the founder's late husband, Adrian Hands, a technologist, community builder, environmentalist, and tireless bicycle advocate who embodied the philosophy that every ride is an adventure. He traveled far and wide to pursue his love of randonneuring, or long-distance cycling. Aside from cycling, he was a technologist who won accolades from both business and technical colleagues. In 2005, he was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) which caused him to lose a significant amount of upper extremity strength. Toward the end of his life, Adrian resolved the GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 78514, the oldest bug in Eye of Gnome (GNOME is part of the GNU/Linux open source operating system). He was unable to use the keyboard with his hands, and instead used the remaining movement in his knees to type in Morse Code, inspiring many through his efforts. Adrian Hands passed away in 2011 due to complications of ALS. His spirit of community, sense of adventure, appreciation of world cultures, and love of learning are all reflected in the culture, philosophy and programs of Adrian Hands Academy.
The logo was designed to honor Adrian Hands and his love for cycling and adventure. The school board desired a logo that would intrigue all those who view it and create opportunities for dialogue about the extraordinary life of Adrian Hands and how the school embodies his spirit in its curriculum and culture.
