I designed the book Kielen elämä, which tells the story of the Finnish language. The book is written by Lari Kotilainen and published by Siltala in 2016. The cover concept is based on the portrait of the founder of literary Finnish, Mikael Agricola, by Albert Edelfelt. The record label on the back cover is a riff on the meaning of the title, ”The Life of a Tongue”, using a detail from another icon, the heraldic lion of Finland.
As a bonus for marketing the book, I designed a record cover merging the Finnish ”Kiitos [some stretch of time]” meme and Run-DMC, on which I featured three influential figures from the history of Finnish language, Agricola, Elias Lönnrot, and Aleksis Kivi.
