Air Inflated Roof Structure
Ta' Qali Greek Theatre
As part of our fourth year engineering course, we were given the task of designing a roof structure for an existing open air theatre in the Ta' Qali National Park. Careful analysis of site uses, characteristics and requirements resulted in an inflatable structure that made us of tubes filled with air supported on steel trussed arches on either side of the theatre, resulting in a very lightweight and stiff structure that spanned over both the stage and the seating area providing protection from rain and solar glare. The concept of 'open air' was retained as all sides of the structure at ground level were left open, both for ventilation and also to retain the natural green visual aspect associated with the site.
