Works in various media
Back in the day, before computers, I was an illustrator as well as a graphic designer. I recently uncovered several old illustrations so I thought I would post them here. It's interesting to think about myself as an illustrator, before Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop became ubiquitous for creating illustrations.
This was done with rapidiograph pen on tracing paper, which I placed over the photograph. I did several of these illustrations for a client who's name I've long since forgotten. I don't even remember what I did them for! It's dated 1990. This image was scanned from a photocopy made from the tracing paper original, which I long ago discarded.
This is a small oil painting I did about the crisis in Ethiopia in the 1980's. It was intended as an editorial illustration, but it was never published.
I worked as a cookbook illustrator for a year. I think it was 1986. Here's a piece I did in rapidiograph pen on that photostat paper we used with reproduction copy cameras. I loved that paper. It was great for detail work, but took a long time to dry. Yes, I know my perspective is off on the cutting board. I churned out about 6 or more of things like this a week on a regular basis. It got tedious.
Rapidiograph pen on photostat paper, c. 1980. The lettering is Letraset transfer type. That should date this piece adequately.
Charcoal on bristol, 1985. I worked for a year in the shoe advertising department of a local department store during my senior year of college. I drew shoes and designed newspaper ads... and learned the hard way what would and would not hold up to reproduction in web printing.
Acrylic on bristol, 1989. This is an illustration for a holiday greeting card for the museum at which I was working as a graphic designer. Our temporary exhibition at the time was a collection of vintage circus posters, so I was asked to create something in keeping with the them. (Scanned from a printed version of the original, which was destroyed long ago.)
Using Escher as my muse, I created this pen illustration for a business incubator company. It was used on the cover of their print brochure. Rapidiograph pen on photostat paper. 1992.
An illustration to be used as background texture for a magazine article about the Viking missions to Mars. It was never published, but I still like it. Transparent watercolor and graphite on hotpress.
This illustration began as a comp for a brochure for a client who's company produces semiconductors. I used the comp to work with the photographer on an extensive shoot where we placed the objects on layers of glass sheets. The camera angle was directly overhead. The photos looked great, but the client liked the comp better. I ended up creating the illustration in watercolor and pen on hot press paper. I believe this dates from around 1990. This image is scanned from the printed piece. The original is owned by the client.
