Student Work - Typographic Portrait

The goal of this project was to create a portrait of your choice through typographical elements. The type should not only correctly illustrate the chosen figure, but also adequately represent the figure through the stylization of the type and chosen typeface. I created this portrait considering these different typographical elements and goals. I feel that I have successfully found a solution to the portrait that not only visually works in terms of capturing detail through different values of type, but also in expressing the unique voice and look of my chosen figure. The person that I chose to illustrate in this typographical portrait was Alissa White-Gluz, lead of the death metal band Arch Enemy. I effectively used only typographical elements to capture the features of her face, movement of her hair, and the range of shadows/highlights to create detail. As the project guidelines defined, I only used on font throughout the entirety of the portrait. Additionally, inspired by her hair and eye color, I added some pops of a blue hue in strategic areas of the portrait. I implemented the design so that the image was clearly viewed as a portrait. I took song lyrics from my favorite Arch Enemy songs, as well as descriptive words to use within the design. I made this decision since it helps to better communicate to the audience who she is so that people may be able to identify her. My decision concerning which font to use within the portrait was greatly influenced by the music and also her clothing style on stage. Alissa usually wears a getup that is tattered and edgy, likewise I found a font that has that bold, tattered style to it. The font used was a decorative font so it was limited in variation, however it was easy to create contrast by using different shades and the hue of blue throughout the portrait. The tools used in order to develop and complete this project included Adobe Illustrator and a reference image from an image search on the Internet. The research done to create this artwork relied mostly on finding an adequate photo with good variation in shadows/highlights and also of good composition. The picture that I chose had good movement shown through her hair, intensity and contrast through her eyes, and overall good framing of her face. The values presented within my chosen photo were also easy to determine and intimidate with text.
