Designing public spaces
Internship at Bureau Detours

Billboard

Bureau Detours is a holistic bureau that finds smart ways to influence and change a public space by creating objects that change the purpose of the environment. They are good at provoking a reaction from the public and let them participate.
Many billboards are considered to be boring. They have a lot of text that many people do not read. This makes them expensive and more or less just taking up space. Bureau Detours offered the municipality to build billboards that look different and can be used in different ways. Viola, another intern, and I designed the billboards in the shape of a painter’s easel and simplified the shape. I made a few sketches of different billboards in the 3D program Google Sketch-up and
a scale model made of wood. We made concepts for the billboard that could expand in the length, width, but also the dept. With these different billboards, that all have the same base, we had the option of adding new functions, like a dining table with seats. In this way we give the space back to the citizens.
Together with a carpenter I build the first prototype. By the time the billboard was finished the municipality was convinced and ordered 3 more.
The lady responsible for the billboards from the municipality heard that I am also a graphic designer and asked if I could design the print on the billboard for the municipality. And so I designed the front and the back of the billboard.
