THE SOCIAL INCUBATOR
Pop-up rehuse | Oude Dok | Ghent, Belgium
Project made by Alexandra Ungurean & Manuel Catalina

Thinking about the activities that are made by people and for people, and that would change the flavor of the area, first things that come to mind are leisure and music, in events that atract the good vibes but also economy and education, because it should be soion between the inner market space and the outer garden area.
Depending on the season or the weather outside, the satellite extentions of the building will be there on a sunny warm day, or everything will be more focused on the inside on the cold rainy days. This is part of the flexible structure concept that adapts to current situations.
mething more than an event building.
Our biggest aim is to bring people from different cultures together, by acting in smaller strategic places that will emphasize these informal interventions that are already there, and reinforce the exchange of activities: art, music and food. Like and urban ripple effect: act in one point for obtaining the continuing and spreading results of an event or action.

THE INTERVENTION
The huge rooms measure together a surface of 4000 m2, such open space is impressive and seems very free, and the project wants to keep this freedom of space. That’s why the flexibility of compartimentation is very important, and it can be achived with modular built in-situ units, with scaffolding and policarbon the panels.
Since the building is mainly a depository space, it contains a lot of scafolding shelves, pieces of wood, furniture and tools.

THE FUNTIONAL PROGRAM
Part of the productive concept of the building would be sittuate in and upper floor of the oldest part of the building, the part with the industrial roof, that would be replaced with glass for and intensive production of vegetables. The vegetables coming from this part of the building could be used for the restaurant inside the building and for a weekly market in the more open area with activity all year round.
Intensive food production in this area is a would have great benefits because the building is very well connected to transport sources being situated next to the highway, the canal and the trainlines. It would also provide local jobs in the area, space for food events, and leisure.

THE BUILDING
The outer-layer of the building, the shell, is made out of red brick walls with metalic structural frames wich allow further openings into the wall for permeability into the building. The fact that this building was also done over time, gives it a divers and joyful object to work with. The metalic structure integrated in the walls allows further modifications to the building, that means it can transform in order to absorb many other functions
The actual roof is in poor conditions and should be changed.
