Commando Group were commissioned by HES (Håland, Eidsvåg & Strøm) to design a new festival in the picturesque settings of Hvalstrand, Norway. Inspired by its seaside location, we created an identity based on nautical signal flags. Playful and highly visible, the flags provide a set of graphics that easily lend themselves to nearly any purpose.
The primary colors and strong shapes build a visual language communicating to multiple generations despite their different references. The identity employs the naïve and hand-crafted qualities of the typeface “Monod” by V.H. Fleisher, which draws a parallel to hand painted boat signage and other maritime typography.
