GW Magazine Winter 2016 cover
Summary:
The cover story featured a star women's basketball player, Jonquel Jones, who has a unique story about how she eventually came to GW. We knew we wanted to use a studio action shot of her and we were inspired by a lot of ESPN publications that combined photography with hand-drawn illustration. The athletics department arranged a photoshoot for the story with sports photographer Ned Dishman. We used a portrait that we felt had the right kind of motion to work well with our illustration idea.
Approach:
Drawing in chalkboard marker is no easy task considering how runny the paint gets in addition to its bleeding and spreading. We realized that working at print size (9" x 11") was going to be nearly impossible to get the level of detail we wanted with that medium so we composited a rough sketch of the illustration around Jonquel's portrait in InDesign. We then projected that onto the chalkboard column in our office at several times print size. Minhee drew out her design on the chalk board over her rough sketch and Logan photographed the illustration which was superimposed, with the portrait, in Photoshop.

Outcome:
The final piece looked better than we expected and we were super grateful that this cover was featured on coverjunkie.
