A02: KSL's Studio 5 lifestyle show was planning to do a tie-in show with the "Hairspray" movie recently. They asked me to mock up a promotional poster replacing the movie star's head shots with those of the host of Studio 5, Brooke Walker, and the other main Studio 5 contributors. At upper left is the original "Hairspray" poster. To the right of that is the first attempt. It was rejected because of possible objections by Brooke to having her face placed on the body of the overweight character. At lower left is the second attempt using existing visual data to make the central character slimmer (lots of clone stamping!). That version was rejected also, and I ended up using an actual shot of Brooke with her own body. In this final version I used clone stamping, frequency separation editing, and the healing brush to touch up the characters' faces. Ultimately, the whole show was put "on hold", but I think the poster turned out well. My only complaint was not having a high-resolution version of the original movie poster to work with.
Salt Lake City's "classic rock" radio station "Arrow 103.5" recently underwent a rebranding with a new logo. I had the assignment to expand elements and visual cues of the new logo into a "look" which could be used to create graphics for other station features such as the popular "Block Party Weekend." I modified and combined stock elements with some elements of my own to create this graphic.
These are web graphics/business cards for the Arrow 103.5 radio station that I've created in the past week. These are four of the best out of 13 I created representing various shows and their hosts. While stock photos were used, they were all extensively retouched, color corrected or changed, and elements were extracted or added. The Kick Back graphic was an original photo taken in our radio studio and the boots and headphones were extracted. The readings we did on composition and dynamic use of text were particularly helpful in creating these, and I'm pleased with how they turned out.
Hosts of Eden is actually a 13-episode dramatic podcast by one of the KSL Newsradio hosts, Jay Mcfarland.  I was asked to prepare a promotional graphic for it last week and it occurred to me that it would make a good movie poster as well. I combined several stock photos and vector images, as well as creating some original elements. There is lots of masking and clone stamp retouching. Our normal text treatments are pretty simple and plain, but with this project I had the opportunity to play with some text effects to make the title text more dramatic.
I love a well- made infographic. This is one I made for ksl.com for a story about tax revenue from ski resorts.
This is a 2-stage animated graphic I created for an upcoming KSL TV special program. I was inspired to use the shapes in the golden ratio we learned about in a previous lesson. In stage 1 of the animation, each block containing a classic work of art animates onto the screen in conjunction with the drawing of the curl from beginning to end. The text reveals on, and then the background dissolves into the image found in stage 2, with the parchment background and faint DaVinci sketches. I created the final state of the graphic (stage 2) in Photoshop before bringing everything into After Effects to animate it.
Another one I did this week for the Arrow. It's a combination of 7 different stock photos combined with hue, saturation, blur, object extraction and masking. I chose the photo of the desks specifically for the unique angle and because the line of the desks directs the eye toward the blackboard. I desaturated most of it and masked out the blackboard so I could leave it green. I added the "rock school" chalkboard drawings, the pictures above the blackboard, and the guitar. The font layers and the logo establish foreground, the receding desks middle ground, and the chalkboard and other elements establish background giving the whole composition good depth and dynamic quality.
Last week I was asked to create some Earth Day related graphics for some of our KSL NewsRadio shows. I chose some stock photos showing gardening, dolphin love, tree hugging, etc., and replaced the heads in the photos with heads of our radio talent, in this case Brian Martin and Doug Wright. I added in the show logos and other small details such as the weed in Doug's mouth. I had to crop and  re-scale the photos to fit the standard proportions of our graphics. It was a fun project!
Here is my video assignment- a demo reel of my work for the class and for my employer as well.
