This was a concept designed for Artists for Peace and Justice and their dedicated work to the people of Haiti. The devastating effects of the 2010 earthquake and the cholera outbreak has made it difficult for children to find a sense of normalcy.
This kit would be given to kids ages 5–7 while they're being treated for cholera at the clinic. When they come in at the start of the four-day treatment, they would receieve this kit to keep with them. My goal was to bring the kids some comfort and happiness despite the traumatic experiences they have been through. The exterior package would be plastic so it could be easily cleaned.
PROCESS
First, I brainstormed different ideas for the end use of the external packaging, and designed a portable lap desk that a child could easily carry. I chose to make my kit be a turtle because they carry their home with them and could be the kids' home away from home while they're being treated in the clinic. Contamination is a big factor in spreading cholera, so the package would be made out of plastic so it could be easily disinfected.
