Chateau de Chillon, Switzerland

Chillon began as a Roman outpost, guarding the strategic road through the Alpine passes. The later history of Chillon was influenced by three major periods: the Savoy Period, the Bernese Period, and the Vaudois Period.
One of the most visited monuments in Switzerland, this 12th century medieval castle is a gem and a celebration of the construction skills of the people at the time.
The earliest recorded information on the castle dates back to 1150. The Savoy family used the castle to control the path along the foreshore of Lac Leman.
The Bernese conquered the Vaud in 1536 and the castle was used as an arsenal and prison for more than 260 years.
Built on a rocky island on the shores of Lac Leman this location provided a natural protection.
