5 Tips To Follow When Relocating Employees

This can be a delicate subject, and it's best to approach it with planning and caution. After all, you're asking these employees to root up their lives and move for the company's sake. But that doesn't mean things need to get out of hand or messy.

Tip #1: Let Your Employees Know Well in Advance
Once you've established exactly how the transition will look, it's best to give your employees as much notice as possible. Change can be challenging for anyone, and asking your employees to move to new location will require a lot of change to their lives. Give them plenty of time to look for new housing and to arrange affairs in the current city they live. Plus, more than likely, several of your employees will have children and a spouse. Meaning they'll need even more time to get their family ready for a big move. Inform them as to why you're asking them to move, as well as if it's going to be permanent or temporary. Believe us when we say the more advance notice you can give them, the more they'll appreciate it.
Tip #2: Plan The Company Budget For Employee Relocation
Not only can moving an employee be stressful, but it also can be an expensive endeavor. So, crunch the numbers well in advance to help both the company and the employee know what to expect. Also, know your company’s relocation policies and packages. For instance, does your company policy cover all living expenses or just a few? Does your company reimburse, or pay for moving expenses directly? Do they have a limit on expenses, and will your company be paying for packing supplies like bubble wrap and cheap moving boxes? Make sure you have a clearly laid out budgeting system in place to help you plan your costs.
Tip #3: Negotiate the Relocation Contract
Going along with tip number two, this one is especially important. There's a lot to consider when relocating an employee, and it's best to enter the negotiation conversation with an exact sense of what the company is going to offer. For instance, if there will be a significant change in the cost of living are you going to renegotiate the employee salary to adjust? Are you going to offer to find and pay for a rental for the first couple months or at least help the employees find new home? Are you going to offer to help the employee sell their current home, or are you going to offer pilot trips so the employee can go house hunting, check out school districts, and get acclimated to the new city? These are the things that you'll need to know before sitting down with employees in talking to them about relocating.

If you put together an information packet you can help your employees reduce their search time as well as give them information about their new city. You can include details such as school district information, insurance information, and housing options. You can even specifically tailor these packets to each employee individually. This is just one more way to help transition your employee to their new home. It's little things like these that will make the employee feel like you care. Which will help them want to help you make the transition as smooth and flawless as possible.
