Design Sutra 2016: Pattachitra

The inspiration behind our garment collection is an ancient traditional Indian craft known as Pattachitra.  Pattachitra is a general term for traditional, cloth-based scroll painting, based in the eastern Indian state, Odisha. The name Pattachitra has evolved from the Sanskrit words patta, meaning canvas, and chitra, meaning picture. Pattachitra is thus a painting done on canvas, and is manifested by rich colourful application, creative motifs and designs, and portrayal of simple themes, mostly mythological in depiction. The lines are bold and clean and angular and sharp. The paintings are elaborate with decorative flowers and foliages and are mostly painted in various colours. All the paintings are given decorative borders.
Keeping these key points in mind and taking inspiration from certain elements like Rath Yatra, Lord Jagannath, Flora and Fauna, of Pattachitra; we would like to present this collection that is an amalgamation of traditional Indian craft with rich Indian handloom fabric along with a contemporary twist. The fabrics used are 100% Handloom cotton fabrics, which have been sourced from Khadi Bhandar. The collection has an indo-western feel to it since the fabrics are traditional but the silhouettes and painting done on them are contemporary. The silhouettes mainly consist of comfortable, smart and chic kurtas, trousers, skirts and tops. The garments are very wearable, easy to mass produce and are an apt representation of our inspiration. The painting done on the garments is an abstract representation, inspired by the traditional motifs found in Pattachitra. Revival of the Indian Handloom Fabrics, the whole concept of Make in India and awareness of Traditional Indian Craft among the youth of the country was the main objective of this project.
