Concept for London buses in 2020

Support and exhibition:
London Transport Museum

Part of the exhibition "Sense and the City", in the London Transport Museum during 2011 and 2012.
The Senseable Buses project aims bringing cultural and transport information to streets.
The idea is that in 2020, buses will sense the city and visually react to their environment, in order to show different kinds of live data. The buses will be covered with OLED, so they can change their skin and show different content.
The buses surface could show a live map with the exact bus location and whatever is going on around it, such as the location of other buses, underground stations, reference sites and buildings, temporary events, among other things, as long as their walking distances.Other informative content that could be displayed is live traffic news. This could help (for example) car drivers avoiding congested areas.
On a different level, buses would also sense and react to cultural content. The bus surface would be the extension of specific places, important references to London culture, memory and identity. I’m referring to museums, libraries, markets, parks, universities, streets, and others. When the bus is approaching one of those places, its appearance would gradually change, depending on the distance to the place in question. This way, it also works like a kind of signage, because people on streets would see the bus, and realize what there is around them.
