Prevention of Wrestling Injuries

As a student at Phillipsburg High School in New Jersey, Andrew “Drew” Horun combines academics and wrestling. Andrew Horun enjoys sharing his knowledge of wrestling as a coach to younger athletes.

One of the most important elements of a wrestler's development is injury prevention. The nature of wrestling as a contact sport exposes athletes to a variety of injuries, including concussions and bruises, though knee and shoulder injuries predominate and result in the most lost time.

Shoulder issues in wrestlers often occur as a result of twisting or pushing the joint beyond its natural range of motion. Flexibility is particularly important as a preventive measure and should include weight-bearing exercises, which support joint stability. Strength training also plays a key role, as it supports development of the muscles that hold the shoulder joint in place.

The same holds for the safety and stability of the knee, which contains a number of ligaments that are prone to stretching or tears. By strengthening the muscles around the knee, while also attending to proper technique, wrestlers can help their knees remain stable and correctly aligned.
