Coat rack design - Wireframe
The Assignment
At Sint Lucas - School of Arts in Antwerp. Simen Willem Johannes studies "Industrial Arts". For an assignments from one of his courses : "Open Studio" he had to design and create a coatrack that consisted out of geometric shapes and was crafted with the material metal - as a wireframe construction. This assignment was to learn how to make contacts with professional craftsmen who worked with metal or other materials.
The Process
In this process I had to start with a moodboard. I picked out different inspiring pictures that I could make geometric.
The pictures where based on three themes : 'nature, ordinary objects and human hands'.
After making some of the themes more abstract, even more geometric, in my sketches. I had a couple of good ideas
what I wanted my coatrack to look like. We had to prototype for ourselves first to learn how you craft with metal. For my final result I contacted a metalworker who crafted my Final Design.
I have to give credit to T. Boeckx for creating my final design in wireframe.
The Final Result
For my final result, I'm proud to see how a small sketch and some bad prototypes turned out to be a good metal design thanks to the professional metalworker I learned to contact. So after all my process of thinking, sketching, prototyping I always try to come up for a name for my "little design pieces". This time I called it : "M.A.N.O." - The name is based on the most inspiring pictures of my moodboard. "Mano" means "the human hand" in Spanish.
