Behind A Shiny Rock

What lies behind the beauty of a diamond? By peeling off the first layer of glitter and glamour, I try to expose the unethical practices that the diamond sector so carefully tries to hide from the outside world.

 For this project I found inspiration in the diamond sector in Africa. In regions as Carnot the use of child labour for finding diamonds is still common. To the outer world these practices are hidden by the sector, which is why I expose the red, flesh diamond inside the object. This represents the heart of the child workers, which is pierced by a stick in order to support the entire structure and thus to make sure that diamonds remain 'forever'.
