Recently I have been considering the design possibilities of using a CNC Router to do 3D carvings. In this method a 3D image is either imported or created within the Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software. The CAM software allows for the assignments of tool paths and will generate the machine gcode that directs the Router’s operations. These coasters are an example of that process. While carving smooth reliefs is a time-consuming process there are a number of secondary possibilities that can greatly increase the production potential. My first inspiration for this process was to create the positives for casting molds, especially sand molds for aluminum castings. Read Less
