Objective_
In this project, we choose a episode from the broadcast This American Life, and transform the episode into a physical book design. I choose episode 835, It will make sense when you’re older. In this episode, there are four stories from different people. The stories are divided by ages, from adolescence, adulthood, middle age to old. The concept of this episode is talking about things that people encountered some problems at a particular moment but then they figured it out when they become older, or things they learn before but they forgot and found out a new way to solve the problem. The whole episode is surrounded with different timing and space and I think it is really interesting. I play with the type to create an interesting layout which express the idea of different timing and space. Also I create a website and mobile app for the digital using purpose.
What's more, I put the concept of Player Piano into my design. “A player piano is a self-playing piano, containing a electro-mechanical mechanism that operates the piano action via pre-programmed music recorded on perforated paper, or in rare instances, metallic rolls, with more modern implementations using Musical Instrument Digital Interface encoded music stored on floppy disks or CDs.” I combine the element of the player piano with the music shown in the stories, which make the design more alive and vivid. I not only use graphic elements to show music but also use sound wave to show the audience laughter. So when reader read the book, they can feel the emotion. The visual idea also use on the website and mobile app.
