Skins - Special Edition DVD Packaging

Skins Packaging Project
A special edition dvd box set
‘Skins’ is a popular slang term amongst British teenagers and is used to define the paper with the glue strip that holds the marijuana or tobacco together. In the very first episode of the TV show, thecharacter Maxxie Oliver (Mitch Hewer) asks Tony Stonem (Nicholas Hoult) if he has any skins to ‘roll a joint’. The name of the series could also portray the very literal definition of the word in respect to different personalities and ethnicities.
My concept is to bring these personalities together through an object or an act that they all share in common. For an example, all characters in the series smoke tobacco or weed. Applying this knowledge to my concept, I decided to include a customizable ashtray as my dvd packaging.
Eight cigarette holders are made to represent the 8 characters (the twin sisters in the second generation are represented as one). Initially, I felt that the packaging should carry scribbles and doodles engraved on to it, representing each of the characters as if used by them. However, taking the idea further, I decided to let the customer take control of this concept by including a carving tool and giving him/her the freedom to carve their friends’ and their own names making each of these limited collections unique and personal.
