Future Appliance: Dishwasher
Challenged by GE Sponsor to provide a “revolutionary” dishwasher design
Dishwashers are not typically the focal point of a kitchen.  Many homes don't have one. They can be loud, bulky and visually compromising. My belief is that appliances that are Eco-friendly, low maintenance and unapologetic will change this perception. My design goal was to re-define the dishwasher as a functionally superior conversation piece.

How does nature tackle water collection in areas of little to no water? This was my starting point. The Namib Desert beetle live in extreme areas of drought. Analysis of their cellular structure reveals microscopic pores that draw moisture directly from the air as the beetles move. The rib like spinal formation on the surface of the shell channels collected water straight into the mouth. My jet spray design was inspired by the form of the beetle shell. Water is continuously fed into a reservoir at the bottom of the dishwasher and recycled. This maximizes the amount of water retained and minimizes evaporation loss. Each sprayer is located such that no space is left un-clean. The door is semi-transparent and the structure includes embedded LED lighting to enable the user to view the inside and monitor progress. An interactive electronic display within the door handle facilitates selection of customizable wash settings.
