Gemelas en Transición
(Twins in transition)
The artwork was created in the month of October with the purpose to participate in a local art exhibition during the month of November in 2016 to commemorate Day of the Death. This event was to encourage local Artist from different kind of expressions (Photography, sculpture, paint, performance, etc.) to participate on a tribute to one of our most recognize celebration in Mexico.
The visual illusion and the uncanny movements in the art field are tendencies that I always found fascinating however, there is a natural rejection about it, notwithstanding my approach with this artwork is to represent a balance between the uncanny and the sensuality.
I got to the conclusion that I need to represent Day of the Death* not only with skeletons... I want something more, something that I have not seen before...
After thinking what can I create I dedicate a few hours on sketching skulls and some Catrinas until I got to the final result, a composition of twins holding together forming one body, one figure like a visual illusion and after that, I thought about a transition of a female figure body turning in to a Catrina.
Finally, the art composition was inspired in the most abstract representation of the vintage movement, the oval.
The twins were designed with different outfits showing their different personalities, on the left we can appreciate a Catrina with a touch of flamenco style with the dots on her skirts and the magenta color touches as a representative color of Mexico on the top a Spanish comb in her head crowned by bougainvillea flowers. The right Catrina is more simple in her dress but full of color and crowned with pearls and cempazuchitl flowers, the representative flowers of the month of November.
The twins are united by a rosary bead with a jade cross, gold jewelry, makeup and black vails.
In the background, I wanted to just show the mystic essence of the night becoming dawn with thirteen stars around the twins and the crescent moon on the top of their heads.
In the end, the twins represent the light and shadow of our personality on a harmonious balance, each one posses something "wrong" like the cigarette and like the color black, but both are in peace with themselves, beautiful integration of the human polarity.
WINNER OF A PLATINUM AWARD
In 2017 the Social Network Art Competition SNAC made a call to all Mexican Artist to Win one-year exhibition in the USA.
"Gemelas en Transición" were the strongest piece that I had at that moment, so I send a email to participate and after some weeks I receive a confirmation that my artwork was a winner of a Platinum Award.
This achievement gave me more confidence and direction for future projects like Miss Catrina and to continue with this path of becoming an Independent Artist developing more the technique of watercolors.

Behind the Artwork
"Gemelas en Transición" is a special artwork because I never imagine the impact on the people and support that friends and family gave me to start my journey as an Independent Artist.
I used to make watercolor when I was studying my degree in Architecture moreover I never realize in that moment that I could even handle the technique in a more artistic level.
