During foundation year one of the core studios is Design. In this class we investigated hierarchy, space, and composition. We also took a close look at systems of organization, color and presentation. I use concepts that I learned in this class in every project that I undertake.

I began with a series of studies that started with blank paper and transformed into dynamic compositions through the repetitive use of a photocopy machine.
Composition study. Produced with blank paper and a copy machine only.

I decided to do a diptych of the earlier composition studies focusing on materiality. The piece hung on the wall has been sanded; the piece on the floor has been coated with half an inch of clear Jell-O.

Further investigation with composition studies.
Materials: Toner, paper, gelatin.
These are studies from the Edna Lawrence Nature lab, painted directly from the microscopes. I decided to use nature as inspiration going into the final project because it is so fertile with beauty and complex systems of hierarchy.

Nature Lab study: Crab claw.
Materials: Guache, Bristol board.
Nature lab study: Hydra.
Materials: Guache, bristol board.
Nature lab study: Rock.
Materials: Guache, Bristol board.
These are the resulting final prints. Each is 8' x 10' and is printed with the bit map method. I put one print on each side of the classroom and re-painted the walls white the night before to enhance the viewer's experience.
