"lt is unlucky to take the third light"- Being the third to light a smoke off of a match or lighter is considered unlucky because during times of war it was thought that a sniper had the best chance of sighting the third person to light.
"Step on a crack, break your mothers back"- ln many cultures children are taught not to disappoint their parents, as though any let-down would be a personal injury. Stepping on a crack, falling off the chosen path, would break your mothers heart.
"Dogs howling in the dark of night howl for death before daylight"- Dog baiting is a form of entertainment and gambling which is illegal in most countries. The dogs torment and often kill an animal after being set on it. The gambler who cannot pay his dues might also find himself chewed up by a metaphorical dog.
"Wear clothes inside out for good luck"- The term 'turncoat' can be traced back to 1557, and refers to a person or group who would turn their coats inside out to hide their colours or badge of allegiance. ln this way, the turncoat increased their luck- if whoever they were with originally was losing, they could avoid going down with them, or even join the other side.
"Three butterflies bring good luck"- There is a sexual technique known as the 'Venus Butterfly' which combines three soft motions performed on a female, using tongue and both hands. The results of this administration could be called happy, or lucky indeed.
"lt is bad luck to see an owl in daylight"- ln trials against organized crime, some witnesses who have seen something they shouldn't have, a daylight owl, go into the witness protection program for their own safety.Tthe bad luck of seeing something forbidden can force an identity change and relocation.
"Breaking a mirror will bring you seven years of bad luck"- A mirror or reflective surface has traditionally been considered to contain a portion of the gazers soul- to break a mirror was to shatter the soul. An event which shatters ones self-image can take years to recover from.
"A swarm of bees sitting on the roof of a house is a sign that the house will burn down"- The opposition of many to one is a determining factor in a democracy, where elections are determined by votes. A thousand myriad supporters can bring down one solid front.
