This prompt for this project was to design an object using the processes we learned in class (steam bending and bent lamination). I thought about what benefits steam bending and bent lamination have that hard-wood, linear designs couldn't do. One conclusion was that steam bending could change its grain direction in a single piece. I wanted inspiration for steam bending, so I turned to the greats: Thonet.

The project became an exercise in reformatting existing designs and styles. In this case, Thonet chair joinery and production methods were studied and adopted to another object type. The goal of the project was to take from a historical precedent and adapt the design to a new context . This kind of adaptation from the past is integral to progress and growth in the future.
