Barrow Hill Railway Roundhouse and Museum

Barrow Hill Railway Roundhouse is Britain’s oldest, and still working, roundhouse.

I was commissioned to design a set of units and panels to be installed inside and outside the grounds of the building showing its history and the surrounding local area.

There was a variety of materials and forms used for the display units. Aluminium ‘biscuit tin’ style units appear outside, with additional solar wind-up audio units fitted next to some. These have recorded audio files installed from people who worked and live in the area with their stories and thoughts. These face in the direction of the subjects they talk about, giving a very visual experience to visitors. Acrylic panels are inside, telling stories of working there and information about one of the steam engines that are permanent fixtures.

Additionally some photography was required for use in displays and an overall record of the project - contributing to a small exhibition at the open day launch.

Worked directly with the curator and members of the trust on-site throughout the project.
