The Final Justice

The Final Justice is a mixed media art installation featuring large ceramic dinosaur skulls, internally lit with color-changing LED lights. There are eight dinosaurs, one for each sitting member of the United States Supreme Court, and they're all shot-to-hell with arrows!

The skulls were hand-sculpted with earthware, and glazed with low-fire glazes. I used a combination of Japanese bamboo archery arrows, and clear acrylic arrows I made by laser-cutting the fletchings from 1/16th inch acrylic sheets and gluing them to acrylic rods. The LED lights are regular 5050RGB strips with pre-programmed controllers.  To diffuse the light (and obstruct the view into the skulls), I attached some old hand-made paper I made while in Japan to the interior of the skulls.

Special thanks to Trailhead Boise and State and Lemp for allowing me to display these sculptures, and Boise State University professor Jim Budde for the excellent support and instruction.
At the installation, the dinosaurs were placed upon a high table, in a semi-circle, with their attention focused on the human skull in the center. It's uncertain whether the human is being delivered a sentence, or being interviewed to fill the vacancy on the court.
Here's how the sculptures look in brighter light.
