City Landscape Project:Moments and Stories

INTRODUCTION

In my Design Foundation class,we were given a project were we had to use a photograph we took in our Photography class for a "City Shoot" and then create 2 different visual compositions that tell different stories, one being achromatic and the other one chromatic. The challenge here was to investigate the relationship between value, colour and texture in the development of form in order to create meaning (in 2 ways in this case).
MATERIALS

                                         -Canson Paper                 -Colored Paper
                                         -Adobe Photoshop            -Scissors
                                         -Glue                                 -Felt-tip Pen
                                         -Pencil                               -Illustration Board
CONCEPTUALIZATION
This is the original Image I had shot for the City Shoot and it's the picture that would serve as my base for this project's composition
I started by sketching out my Image in different positions and then I decided that I wanted my achromatic composition to have a creepy atmosphere being evoked,so I decided I would trace out the outline of the lamp posts on a sheet of Canson paper, and I would replace the light bulbs with menacing looking eyes.As for the chromatic artwork,I came up with the idea of merging nature with technology/artificial elements.
PRODUCTION
For the chromatic artwork, I started by rendering the image in Photoshop in a more brown-ish colour as a way to represent tree trunks and tree branches.
Then, I cut up several organic shapes on a piece of green paper and to add more texture to the leaves,I made small cuts on the sides of the leaves.
FINAL WORKS
As you can see, most of the achromatic composition contains rectilinear lines and geometric shapes for the metal bars and the eyes. To make the metal bars a bit more natural, I added value using pencil shaving and used the graphite to make the shadows on the bars. Ink dots were used for the sky to create decorative space, which also makes it look like it’s a night with many stars in the sky.
Leaves were placed all around the rim of the street lamps to make them look like trees and leaves were placed on branches in ways that give a more natural motion and positioning.Unity through variety is one of the elements seen here due to the several directions being taken both by the rectilinear posts and the leaves pointing in several directions,as well al the mixture between using various means such as digital software, collage, etc.
CONCLUSION

What I am most proud of in this project is the way I was able to tell 2 different stories and create different moods/atmospheres with an initial image. However if I were to change something,I would have spend a bit more time on the chromatic piece by possibly duplicating the lamp posts in order to make it look more like a forest and I would have made the sky green with more leave/tree-top pattern to use more elements such as patterns and repetition. This was a very fun project because I was able to practice and improve skills such as making collages and we had a lot more freedom to do what we wanted and allowed more chances of demonstrating a person’s creativity rather than technique, even though technique is necessary as well.
