What is a Child Forensic Interview?

A psychologist with her own private practice, Dr. Miriam Galindo has been heavily involved with child custody and other family related cases. One of Dr. Miriam Galindo’s roles is conducting interviews as a registered child forensic interviewer.

A child forensic interview is one aspect of a full child abuse investigation. This involves a conversation with a child that has been structured to obtain information of a possible occurrence that the child has experienced or witnessed. The information obtained may aid in criminal investigation, determine if the child needs psychological or medical attention, and determine if the current living arrangement is safe for the child. The approach used yields evidence that can stand up in court if a trial is eventually warranted.

The interview is performed by a neutral professional that has been competently trained, employing methods that meet the required standards. While mental health professionals previously performed the interview, it later became apparent that the techniques utilized, particularly involving suggestibility, were not appropriate from a forensic perspective.
