When working with a contractor, property owners must first know how how to communicate. A skilled contractor will strive to keep the lines of communication open, but a client must be able to advocate for his or her needs. Most contractors have specific systems for client contact, and clients often do not know what these are until they do not fit. By specifically asking what the method of contact will be, the client can establush a channel for any necessary changes.

Clients also should discuss supply purchases along the way. Many clients try to purchase their own supplies, whether to ease the contractor's process or to get a better price. If these items are not of good quality, however, or do not arrive in time, the process will become lengthier and more expensive. If the client instead clearly communicates what he or she wants in appliances or supplies, the contractor can use his or her contacts to get a reasonable price.

Similarly, clients should give specific details about desired features, particularly when the item is costly. Lighting, for example, is expensive to change after the fact. If the client and contractor discuss a particular type of feature, it reduces the cost of ponential replaceent while allowing the contractor to build around what the client needs.
