Project Type: Student Work
Client: Fictitious
Designer: Ann Samuelson
Theme: Alphabet as Image
Software: Adobe Indesign and Illustrator
Create an illustration and layout for a 24-page children’s book. This project includes considerations of conceptual thinking, intent of the author, and stylistic compatibility between literature and art. Content will include pre-press preparation of art—you will need to package your final result, as if you were sending it for print.Another aspect of this problem is to create typographic form as a response to the message in the text—to express visually (through illustrations and overall design of the book) the message of the written words—bringing them even more expressive power.
Process: The illustrations of the characters in this story were created by manipulating letters from a few sets of different types of alphabets that were given with the project. Since the characters were meant to be the main focus of the book, the environments that were created for the characters were kept very simple with many patterned backgrounds along with some that had environmental elements to them as well. The colors that were chosen in these designs were a mixture of various muted cool and warm tones along with a few earth tones as well to depict an African theme since this story is an Ghanaian folktale. The typeface that was used is Futura since it is a playful san serif that can be easily read by anyone specifically children since this book is targeted more towards them.
