A chronic shortage of clean water is one of the main complaints of the approximately 1 million people living in Kathmandu Valley. Although about 70% of this population has a private connection to the piped water supply system, most households only receive water for a few hours a day as the service is intermittent and is polluted by anthropogenic and natural contaminants. -(Nepal Water for Health and Water Aid and Water and Sanitation Program [2000]).
Because of this irregular water schedule, it is even more difficult for residents of the Kathmandu region to collect water. Not only are they unable to collect the water, they don’t have time to manage and control the amount of water that is supplied to them. My proposal will help them to collect a volume of 30 litres of clean, purified water per day without having to wait and manage the supply themselves.
The overall idea is to design a water collection & filtration system for the urban areas of Nepal. The specific goal for this project is to supply the Kathmandu Valley region with fresh, safe, clean drinking water and to save the people living in that region time waiting to collect water because of the intermittent supply.
The first prototype I designed consisted of two oil containers that I connected together. I also found an old water filter and tested it with dirty water to see its effectiveness. The water did come out clearer but there was still a lot of dirt trapped in the filter which was a problem. The main problem was controlling the level of water in the top reservoir which was solved with the introduction of a float valve.
