Improving the Usability of Walking Frames (Project)

My fourth year dissertation project started with identifying the problems which the elderly face when using walking frames. A review of relevant literature aided in providing the basic knowledge on the elderly and theories of interest.
Standard 4 legged walkers and rollators were identified as the most commonly used walking frames.
A user group of three elderly users provided user insight in to the problems they face. A group of therapist also provided professional knowledge and opinions of walking frames.
Universal Design was a key theory of designing a product that could be used for any type of user.
Areas of focus as identified by the analysis of field research.
Observations of users identified subconscious movements and interactions
The design process of a more user friendly walking frame began with designing a new braking system
Conceptual designs of aesthetic appearance
A test model was required as proof of concept for the braking system. Standard castors were used for easy maintenance.
