The call of the dogs

The call of the dogs
Mush !
In the Yukon, northern Canada, some people live in the wild country all year around with dozens of dogs and their rustic houses. I have spent a week with a handler, whose job is to feed, clean, set and train the dogs for the dog sled races in Alaska and Yukon as the famous Yukon Quest, 1,000 miles long lasting from 10 to 18 days. This photo serie aims to document and share my experience with this life.

The condition and climate are close to extreme with a winter 7 months long and temperatures going as low as -40 Deg°C. The Yukon River freezes to an average depth of 52" in interior Alaska.

The practice of using dogs to pull sleds dates back to at least 2000 BC, and purposes includes anything from hauling wood, delivering milk, mail to rural travel.
Today even with the replacement of snowmobiles, the utilisation of sled dogs stay fairly strong for passion of the race, trappers or tourism.
Betwin tradition, modernity, passion, mutual connexion and imaginary dreams, dog sled stands in the middle.
