A painting that depicts a Balinese folklore, Manik Angkeran, which tells the origin of Bali Strait:

In earlier times in the kingdom of Daha, Kediri, East Java, lived a Brahmin by the name of Sidi Mantra and he is very famous for his ability to create miracles. Sanghyang Widya or The Supreme God presented him with prosperity and a beautiful wife. After few years of marriage, they had a son who they called Manik Angkeran.

Manik Angkeran is a handsome and clever young man, however, he has an unfavourable nature, and he likes to gamble. He often lost the gamble, he even uses his parent’s property to gamble and he has a lot of debt everywhere. As he cannot repay the debt, Manik Angkeran asked his father to assist him. Sidi Mantra fasted and prayed for help from Gods. Suddenly he heard a voice, "Hi, Sidi Mantra, in the crater of Mount Agung there's a treasure guarded by a dragon that is called Dragon Besukih. Go there and ask if he would give a little of his treasure."
Sidi Mantra went to Mount Agung to overcome all obstacles. He arrived at the edge of the crater of Mount Agung and sat cross-legged. As he rang the bell he cast a spell and summons the Dragon Besukih name. Not long after the Dragon came out. After hearing the intention of Sidhi Mantra’s, Dragon Besukih moved its body and from its scales came out gold and diamonds. After thanking Dragon Besukih, Sidi Mantra excused himself. All diamond and gold that were received from Dragon Besukih were given to Manik Angkeran and he hopes that Manik Angkeran will not gamble anymore. However, in contrast to what he had hoped, the treasure was used by Manik Angkeran as a bet in another gamble. Manik Angkeran once again requested the help of his father and of course Sidi Mantra refused to help his son.

Manik Angkeran heard from his friends that the treasures were obtained from Mount Agung. Manik Angkeran knows how to get and that he must cast a spell but he never learned about prayer and mantra. So, he just brought a bell that was stolen from his father while he slept.

Manik Angkeran reached the crater of Mount Agung and started to ring the bell. He was very frightened when he saw the Dragon Besukih. Having heard Manik Angkeran’s intention to see him, Dragon Besukih said, "I will give you the treasure you're asking, but you must promise me that you will change your behaviour. Do not gamble again. Remember the law of karma."
Manik Angkeran fascinated by gold, diamonds, and jewels in front of him. Suddenly there was malicious intent that arose in his heart. Wanting to get more treasure, with lightning speed he cut the tail of Dragon Besukih when it turned its back to return to the cave. Manik Angkeran immediately fled and Dragon Besukih did not manage to catch him. The dragon then used its magical power by licking Manik Angkeran's track, Manik Angkeran was immediately burned down to ashes.
Sidi Mantra heard the death of his son and became very sad. He then visited Dragon Besukih and begged for his son to be revived. Dragon agreed to revive Manik Angkeran with a condition that Sidi Mantra repaired the dragon’s tail. After Manik Angkeran return back he apologised to the dragon and promised to become a good person. Sidi Mantra knew that her son had regretted, but he also understands that they can no longer live together.

"You have to start a new life but not here," he said. In the blink of an eye Sidi Mantra disappeared. Where he stood rise water source that increasingly large and became an ocean. With his magical wand Sidi Mantra created a line to separate him with his son.

Now the place where Sidi Mantra strokes his magical want has turned as Bali strait which separates the island of Java to Bali.
