I was lucky enough to be able to attend Jer Thorp's 3D data visualization course this past May. Jer Thorp is the 'data visualization expert in resident for the NYT R&D Lab'. Basically he is the smartest most interesting person on the planet. He gives these workshops out of his studio/house in DUMBO, where he teaches you how to program stuff you didn't think was at all possible. And doing so in just a matter of a few hours. It was a great experience being able to write every line of code with his guidance, and coming away with something like this.
