The aim of the Candlestick light concept is not only to use wood as an aesthetic and structural component but also as the lighting medium itself. Rather than the design being a mere housing device for the light, the Candlestick actually becomes the source and through the use of all 90° angles in the design this notion becomes the basis of the design. The Candlestick has been designed for use on a work surface, providing the user a soft, even light.

This omnidirectional light utilises a unique medium called ‘paperwood’ to obscure strips of Light Emitting Diodes (LED) embedded in the four opposing sides. This creates a wooded ‘barrier’ when the light is off, but allows light to pass through when the LEDs are switched on. Paperwood is a form of wood veneer that has been created through a similar process to standard wood veneers but on a much thinner cut. Paperwood is comparable to a standard 300 - 500gsm paper weight, but rather than breaking the wood down to pulp and then reconstituting it as paper, paperwood keeps the wood cellulose intact to create a sheet of exceptionally thin wood. This allows the medium to retain its inherent wood qualities that give each piece of wood its own character.

The perfectly all right angled minimalist design also will have no distinguishable feature as a light fitting when off, as the paperwood will completely obscure the LED S. Only when the light is turned on will it become apparent that it is in fact a light source with the LEDs breaking through the surface of the wood.

Using this unique medium in combination with LEDs, it creates an interesting and organic effect. As the light
diffuses through the wood, the characteristics of the wood are brought to life using light as a catalyst. The subtle
variations in grain, colour, density and pattern of the wood allow for an essentially organic light source that will make each Candlestick not only a unique light fitting but also a unique light source.
