Don't forget your roots
This was the first painting I had completed for myself in many years, inspired by my 3 months traveling in America and influenced by the art and creativity of LA.

When I was in San Francisco and Los Angeles in the summer of 2011, I saw a lot of pohutukawa trees (NZ's "Christmas Tree" which flowers in summer. To me, they symbolise warmth, sunshine and good times!). They were flowering in the northern hemisphere summer and were such a special slice of home to me. On a walk to the beach in Santa Monica, I saw a hummingbird in one, we don't have them here in NZ so only a few people would appreciate just how cool that is!

The swing is a fond memory from my stay with the Vallee Family in New Jersey.

No matter where I branch out around the world, my roots will always be in New Zealand
