Dwarfs'n Goblins Illustration
Illustration realized for a videogame, here are shown all the steps to obtain the final result.
Character design and sketch of some game elements, this helped me to find the style of the illustration after a long research of various references around the web.
Rough sketch: the initial sketch is very quick and helps me to define composition and the elements disposition. At this stage I'm more focused on the message of the illustration and how to deliver it.
Sketch refined: all the details are drawn here, I refine the poses of the characters, their expression and all the little details like the armor or the weapons. At this point is also time to take big decisions like: how big should be the nipples of the goblin?
Digital ink: the modulation of the ink's thickness helps to read better the different planes of the image, the thicker elements are in the foreground and the thiner in the background.
Flat colors: time to add some colors, sometimes I repeat this process more than one time to be sure that the color palette is fine, here I've also changed the colors of the lines to blend them better with the rest of the elements.
Shadows: with some shadows I start giving some volumes to the characters and the elements in the scene and defining the sources of light.
Lights: the main source of light is right in front of the characters, so our two heroes are wrapped inside the light emitted by the minerals. I've also added a second layer of shadows to give more depth and details to the image.
Refine the focus of the scene: here I've pushed back al the elements in the backgrounds like the enemies and the columns, I've also added some particles generated by the minerals. On the characters I've added a purple backlight and I've keep their hands and faces brighter than the rest of the body to drive the focus of the image on them and on the minerals.
The final version: here I've just added some smoke on the ground to hide a bit more the enemies and give more prospective to the plane.
Here are all the passages in sequence in an animated gif.
